Tiger PrawnsKnown in the United States as ‘shrimp’ or ‘tiger shrimp’, this species of prawn is renowned for its tasty flesh worldwide.  So much so in fact that Greenpeace put it on a ‘red list’ of species under threat at one point.

Ironically, now it is also considered an invasive species in the Gulf of Mexico where the females are breaking all size records coming in at over a foot in length!

Sea BassDebate has been ferocious in recent years as to the origin of the word “seabass”. The traditional word was “bass” but that has changed with the recent popularity of cooking programmes and the expansion of restaurant marketing, both of which have adopted the phrase “seabass”. There is only one type of bass in the British Isles and thus the expression “seabass” is probably unnecessary, although the Large Mouth (or Black) Bass indigenous to North America has been widely stocked in Southern Europe with significant breeding populations in many lakes and rivers in southwestern France. Thus the distinction is valid in a European context.

In Rody’s Bistro we strive to provide a better alternative to your standard Irish pub grub fare.  We like to introduce something a bit different and sample more exotic continental dishes.

Sometimes however when you are feeling a bit blue, the traditional comfort food you used to get when you were young works best.  So this weekend why not tuck into our traditional Irish lamb stew served with creamy mash potato followed by jelly and ice cream – just like Mama used to make!

* Gołąbki can be made with either peppers or cabbage wrapped around a minced pork filling and is a traditional Polish dish with variants common throughout Eastern Europe.  It is the plural of gołąbek which roughly translates as ‘little pigeon’ although this refers to the shape of the dish rather than the ingredients therein!
